Blizz has announced that Cataclysm will be available for digital download on launch day, midnight PST. Lots of similar articles about this online, here's one:

Looks like you can pre-order online then download on the day to skip the queues. Of course if you want CE, the box or any freebies that come with the pre-order, you'll still need to queue.
